Cuba and the Philippines were also major territorial gains because those islands had many resources including sugar and coal, which was used for the naval vessels. The sugar was taken and traded abroad and the US would bring it to the West Coast and China for money. The territorial gains by the US were fueled by Americans because they wanted to own islands abroad so they could become a more powerful country.
